The system of the main personages and conflicts of the novel by N. S. Leskov “The Cathedral Clergy” is examined, on the one hand, as a representation of the Russian Church drama in the XIX century, and, on the other hand, as a prototype of its tragedy in the XX century. In each of these historical periods the Russian Church found itself in the situation of information and psychological war with the followers of vulgar materialism, atheism and nihilism. To analyze the specifics of this situation the author uses the conceptual apparatus of the culturological theory of language by W. von Humboldt and synergetic anthropology by S. S. Khoruzhy.
