Продолжая реализацию военно-политического проекта в виде Багдадского пакта, США не только не добились благосклонности Египта, но и вызвали крайне негативную его реакцию, которая стала производной понимания того, что американские инициативы являлись попыткой усиления традиционного соперника Египта в борьбе за лидерство в арабском мире - Ирака.
Указанные обстоятельства не только не способствовали включению Египта в военно-политический блок государств на Ближнем Востоке, инициированный Вашингтоном, но и сориентировали против подобных инициатив ряд арабских стран, симпатизировавших антиколониальным настроениям египетского руководства.
К тому же настойчивость инициатив государств Запада и методы их реализации побуждали Каир к поиску защиты в лице альтернативного центра силы. В результате в условиях обострения египетско- израильских отношений накануне Суэцкого кризиса происходит сближение Египта с СССР. При этом Вашингтон сохранил возможность сближения с Каиром, формально не став членом Багдадского пакта, а также «оставшись в стороне» при осуществлении военной антиегипетской акции Великобритании, Франции и Израиля в октябре 1956 г.
