Hydromorphic symbolism in the Russian Wedding folklore of the Udmurt Republic: ethnic Parallels with the Udmurt traditional culture
The article is devoted to one of the most important symbols in the mythological picture of the world of the Russian population of the Udmurt Republic (UR) - the mythology of water. The author discusses the characteristics of the most important hydromorphic images found in wedding ritual texts. The definitions of the types of water found in the poetic texts of the Russian wedding ceremony of the UR - water, sea, river, fishing are discussed. Special attention is paid to the Kama hydronyms, the Kolyma sea. It is shown that water in the texts of the wedding ceremony symbolizes the border between the earth and the otherworld, the magical purification. The poetic characteristic of the water surface is described. It is noted that the image of flowing water is more common at the beginning of poetic texts, marking the starting point in the development of the plot. This arrangement of the motif focuses on the characters and song objects, draws attention to hydromorphic images. It is revealed that the exposure of water at the beginning of the songs contributes to «connect» students to the mythological layers of the wedding ceremony. The characteristic elements of hydromorphic symbols often added new semantic meanings to wedding songs, while maintaining their inherent semantics. The coordination of the poetic characteristics of the water surface with the symbols of expensive fabrics (satin, velvet, plush) is considered. An allegorical comparison of the water surface with the reflection of celestial bodies is revealed.
The relevance of the study is due to the fact that it is based on field materials of little-studied Russian folk tradition of the Kama-Vyatka region within the boundaries of modern Udmurtia. The analysis of the mythology of water in Russian wedding songs recorded in the territory of modern Udmurtia revealed a number of parallels with the Udmurt traditional culture: the attitude to the spring as a sacred phenomenon; the popularity of the image of a boiling spring, flowing water in wedding and recruitment ceremonies; the perception of the Kama (White Kama, the great Sacred river) as a «large river», «water».
