Brahma (Skt.) The creative aspect of the Hindu triad of forces governing all phenomena. Brahma corresponds to the birth process and rules over destiny; his symbol is the golden egg or aura. The creative force of Brahma brings all beings into existence. His female counterpart is Saraswati, the patroness of the Sixty-four Arts. In the microcosm, Brahma resides in the Navel Chakra.

Brahma Nadi (Skt.) The innermost subtle channel of the Sushumna, the central channel of the Subtle Body. Known as the Royal Road, it is the expression of the most subtle level of spiritual refinement.

Brahmanda (Skt.) The "egg" or aura of

Brahma, said to contain the whole universe. A term used to denote the Subtle Body in its role of microcosm to the macrocosm of Brahma.

Brahmarandhra (Skt.) The "Aperture of Brahma." The fontanel opening at the top of the head, which is visible at birth but closes during the first year of life. According to Eastern occult tradition, the soul normally enters or leaves the body through this opening.

Buddha (Skt.) The Enlightened One. The historical Buddha was a prince who renounced the royal life and became an ascetic. He was called the Buddha after he achieved Enlightenment.

Buddha Body The human body transformed into an enlightened or superhuman body through the practice of physical and mental Yoga.

Buddha Field The psychic atmosphere created by the presence of an Enlightened person.

Chakra (Skt.) Mystic circle, literally "wheel." A psychic center or focal point within the Subtle Body. The Chakras are located primarily at the sexual region, spleen, navel, heart, throat, and head. Each Chakra, or plasma field, acts as a transformer of energies, converting impulses from one frequency to another. Often referred to as "lotuses," the Chakras open and close according to psychophysical conditions. Each Chakra has a specific number of divisions or "petals" that connect to parts of the Subtle Body. A gathering of Tantrics is also known as a Chakra.

Chakra Puja (Skt.) A Tantric term meaning "circular worship," normally referring to ritualized sexual acts performed by more than one couple seated in a circle. This term can also mean the conscious focusing of devotional energies to open up the Chakras of the Subtle Body.

Chakrasambhara (Skt.) "The Ruler of the Chakras." A Tantric mystic form (yidam) sym-

bolizing mystic truths. An expression of dynamic teachings. The name of an important Tantra that treats the transforming effect of solar (as opposed to lunar) energy. A vehicle of Liberation, personified by a couple in sexual union.

Chandamaharosana (Skt.) "The Great Moon Elixir." A Tantric mystic form (yidam) and tutelary deity. The name of an important Tantra that concerns itself with the conscious control of lunar energy. Chandamaharosana is symbolized by the full moon, both in the macrocosm and the microcosm, and personified by a couple in sexual union in a squatting or halfkneeling position.

Chinnamasta (Skt.) A Tanric goddess or secret mystic form, the "Egoless Yogini" or female adept of sexual Yoga. She is depicted having severed her own head (the ego) and holding it in her hand. Three streams of blood (symbolizing the three principal channels of the Subtle Body) flow from her exposed neck and nourish her own severed head as well as her two attendants, Varnini and Dakini. The mysteries of Chinnamasta are said to have originated in China.

Chitrini (Skt.) A category of woman referred to in the ancient Hindu love treatises. Known as the "Art woman," she emanates from the heavenly realm. The same term is used to refer to one of the very subtle channels making up the Sushumna, the central channel of the Subtle Body.

Chueh-Chen (Ch.) Chinese crescent-shaped or horned pillows used to support the buttocks during love-making.

Cinnabar Field/Terrace Taoist term designating the solar or transforming plexus. Texts refer to it as located just below the navel.

Complete Breath A Yogic breathing practice in which conscious control of the breath's threefold division into inhalation, retention, and exhalation is developed. The complete breath is the first step in using the breathing function as a means to Liberation.

Cooling Breath A Yogic breathing technique in which the breath is inhaled through the tongue formed into a tube. It helps cool the whole body, reduces high blood pressure, soothes the eyes and ears, and is beneficial to the liver and spleen. Also known as Crow Beak or Kaki Mudra.

Crow Beak See Cooling Breath.

Crow Posture A sexual posture for mutual oral-genital intercourse. Referred to as Sixtynine in the West.

Crucible Taoist and Tantric term designating the female sexual partner and, especially, the Yoni. Also the instrument through which the transformations take place.

Dakini (Skt.) The personification of the cosmic feminine energy as an erotic Wisdom- archetype—sometimes creative, sometimes dissolutive. A guardian of the esoteric teachings, a heavenly goddess, the expression of the exalted intuition. A muse.

Dark Girl See Hsuan-Nu.

Devadasi (Skt.) Literally "Servant of God." A temple dancer, of whom there were several categories. The highest were great Yoginis who exercised control over their body functions. They were initiatresses of Tantric Yoga, considered to be mistresses of the temple gods and embodiments of the Gopis. The Sexual Secrets were taught by them.

Dhanurasana (Skt.) Literally "bow posture." It stretches and strengthens the abdominal and back muscles, aids digestion, and invigorates the gonads, which control sexuality.

Do-In (Jap.) Oriental self-massage, aimed at bringing the body into harmony with the cosmos.

Dorje (Tib.) The Imperishable, the Adamantine or "Diamond Scepter." A Tantric symbol for the male sexual organ (the Lingam) and a ritual implement used in high magic.

Double Lotus Peak A Taoist mystic and sexological term for the breasts of woman.

Dyaus (Skt.) Heaven, the sky, the supreme firmament. Dyaus, the sky father, covers the earth and fertilizes her with rain, his seed. An ancient Vedic term, equivalent to the "ether," the connecting agent between elements.

EH (Skt.) Tantric seed-sound or syllable representing the transformatory power of the Navel Chakra. A natural sound expressed during passionate love-making.

Elected Girl See Ts'ai-nu.

Enneagram A mystic diagram based on the number nine. Popularized by George Gurdjieff, it shows the interrelationship between nine points around the circumference of a circle. Each point corresponds to a bodily aperture (in the microcosm) and planet (in the macrocosm). A symbol used by occultists as a glyph of the psyche.

Essence of Coral See White Snow.

Essence of Woman Taoist term for the sexual secretions produced in the Yoni of woman during the heights of climax.

Fan-Yun-Fu-Yu (Ch.) Literally "reverse

clouds and inverted rain." A term used to denote male homosexuality and anal intercourse.

Flowery Lake Taoist term for the Head Chakra of the Subtle Body.

GAM (Skt.) Tantric seed-syllable of Ganesha, the elephant-headed Lord of Obstacles. Pronounced "GANG" or "GUNG . "

Gandapa (Tib.) The name of a famous Tantric teacher who, after years of celibacy, achieved Liberation through spontaneous erotic contact with a Yogini. Also known as Ghantapa.

Ganesha (Skt.) The elephant-headed deity of the Hindu Pantheon. Several myths tell how he was magically created by Parvati and through a boon became the first deity to be worshipped in all Hindu rites. Also known as Ganapati, he is referred to as the Lord of Obstacles and is associated with the Sexual Chakra of the Subtle Body. He brings good fortune and success.

GANG (Skt.) See GAM.

Garuda (Skt.) A great mythical bird, the vehicle of Vishnu. He devours physical and psychological poisons and is portrayed holding a snake. Identified with dynamic occult power. A protector deity and guardian of the Tantric mysteries.

Gayatri Mantra (Skt.) A Sanskrit Mantra or power phrase, " O M - B H U R - B H U - W A H - SWA," which evokes the Three Realms (this world, the next world, and Eternity). Used in magical acts and rites and for psychic protection and focusing healing energy. It represents the surrender and offering of the self to higher forces and helps confer spiritual direction. An appropriate Mantra for love-making.

Goldasana (Skt.) The crane posture. Helpful in developing balance and posture, it strengthens the hips and legs and stimulates the internal organs.

Gomukhasana (Skt.) The head of a cow, a Yoga posture that creates an energy circuit beneficial to the upper Chakras.

Gopi (Skt.) Cow-girl or milkmaid. The Gopis are all manifestations of Vishnu's consort, Lakshmi. They express the power of longing (both erotic and spiritual) and represent the emotions refined. The Gopis vie for Krishna's attention, participating with him in a circular erotic dance that channels the emotions through the Chakras.

Goraksasana (Skt.) The cow-herder posture. A difficult balancing pose that aids the control of sexual energy. Named after a famous Yogic teacher.

Great Axis/Pathway/River The subtle

"psychic pathway" that runs from the region of the perineum to the fontanel at the top of the head. Tantra teaches that the Great Axis connects the individual with the cosmos. See also Holy Mount Meru.

Guhyasamaja (Skt.) "The Assembly of Secrets." A Tantric mystic form (yidam) and tutelary deity. The name of an important Tantra, personified by a seated couple in sexual union.

Guhyeshwari (Skt.) A secret form of the goddess known as the Lady of Mysteries. A name of the Tantric sex initiatress.

Guna (Skt.) Quality or attribute. A constituent of Nature and a manifestation of consciousness. The three principal gunas, referred to as Sattva (the creative), Rajas (the preserving), and Tamas (the transcendental), permeate all that exists.

Guru (Skt.) Teacher, spiritual master, guide. Literally "the dispeller of ignorance," a Guru is also a touchstone, an ideal to which the discipline aspires. A Guru's role is to initiate.

Halasana (Skt.) The plow posture. A simple Yoga posture that stretches and strengthens the muscles, stimulates the thyroid and parathyroid glands, and helps one gain control over sexual energy.

HAMSA (Skt.) Literally "Great Swan" or "Bird of the Soul." A power word, or Mantra, derived from the sounds made by the breath while exhaling ("HAM") and inhaling ("SA"). Used as a meditation device to gain ascendancy over the normally involuntary breathing process. See HANG.

HANG (Skt.) A Tantric seed-sound or syllable associated with the space element, the ears, the sense of hearing, and the shape of a flaming point. Sometimes pronounced "HAM."

Harikata (Jap.) A dildo or artificial Lingam. Often a replica of the husband's Lingam, used for self-satisfaction during periods when he is absent. Kept in a special box and treated with honor.

Hastakara Yantra (Skt.) A Yantra, or mystic diagram of the hands, illustrating the relationship of subtle forces influencing individual destiny. The symbols relate to cosmological forces and are used by palmists to help focus on archetypes.

Hastini (Skt.) A category of woman referred to in the ancient Hindu love treatises. Known as the "Elephant woman," she emanates from the elemental realms.

Hatha Yoga (Skt.) The physical practice of Yoga based on Pranayama (the science of

breath). Hatha Yoga refers to the HA-breath of the sun (through the right side of the body) and the THA-breath of the moon (through the left side of the body) in harmonious balance. The word "Yoga" means to yoke or join together. Physical postures help harmonize the breathing process. See Solar-Lunar Breathing.

Head Chakra The uppermost center of the Subtle Body, visualized as a downwardpointing lotus of thirty-two petals. The focal point for the lunar forces of the microcosm. Popularized Tantra refers to the Head Chakra as "the thousand-petaled lotus."

Healing Breath A Yogic breathing practice whereby a fixed 1 : 4 : 2 ratio of the times taken up by inhalation, retention, and exhalation is consciously induced. This is known as the Healing Breath, which has the effect of slowing the breathing and relaxing and healing the body.

Heart Chakra The middle center of the Subtle Body, visualized as a downward-point- ing lotus of eight petals. The focal point for the emotions.

Heavenly and Earthly Net An ancient Taoist love-making rite in which couples make love in imitation of animals and birds in the belief that this helps restore Nature's order and averts calamities.

Heroic Posture See Virasana.

Hevajra (Skt.) "The Indestructible." A Tantric mystic form (yidam) that symbolizes the mystery teachings of the lunar cycle. As a tutelary deity, Hevajra is portrayed dancing ecstatically in sexual union. The name of an important Tantra.

Holy Mount Meru The mythical center of the universe according to Hindu and Buddhist cosmology. The abode of Shiva and Shakti. A great pilgrimage place, identified with Mount Kailash, in western Tibet. One of the names of the central channel of the Subtle Body. See Great Axis/Pathway/River.

Hsuan-Nu (Ch.) "The Dark Girl." Instructress in the Taoist arcana of sex. She is credited with authoring three books on military strategy and is identified with the Taoist "Peach of Immortality." One of three sex initiatresses of the mythical Yellow Emperor.

Hun (Ch.) The Great Spirit. According to the Taoist view, the Hun enters the body of the child at the moment when the first breath is taken and is associated with the Yang or male solar force. The Great Spirit co-exists with the Great Soul (Po), and as death approaches, leaves the body first.

HUNG (Skt.) Also referred to as "HUM . " A Tantric power-syllable or Mantra that expresses the transcendence inherent in voidness. By uttering this sound, one awakens the Kundalini.

Ida (Skt.) One of the three principal channels of the Subtle Body. From the left nostril the Ida rises to the crown of the head and descends to the base of the spine, crossing over the central channel at each Chakra. Sometimes referred to as the "Force of Vishnu."

Indra (Skt.) The Hindu king of the gods according to the Vedas. The ever-young, heroic ruler of the world, whose magical weapon is

the thunderbolt. The embodiment of virility and the cause of fertility.

Inner Yang A Taoist term used to describe the subtle glandular secretions produced in the Yoni of the sexually ecstatic woman. Credited with powers of rejuvenation.

Ishvari (Skt.) A name of exalted femininity. A Wisdom goddess or Dakini of white color, associated with the space element and the center of the universe.

Jade Fountain/Liquid A Taoist sexological term for the saliva produced in the mouth of a woman during the heights of sexual ecstasy. Credited with a vitalizing and strengthening effect on the partner who absorbs it. Also called Sweet Spring.

Jalandhara Bandha/Mudra (Skt.) A Yoga posture whereby the neck and throat are contracted into a hook shape, the chin resting on the top of the chest. An aid to sense withdrawal, this technique stimulates the thyroid gland and helps develop the powers of visualization.

Jiva (Skt.) The Immortal Soul. The Individual Soul united with its Eternal Unchanging Source. Individual consciousness.

Kaki Mudra (Skt.) See Cooling Breath.

Kalachakra (Skt.) "Time Wheel." A Tantric mystic form (yidam) that symbolizes the relationship between inner and outer realities, especially the correlation between astrology and physiology. Also, the cycles of change in both microcosm and macrocosm. The name of an important Tantra, said to have been introduced from the magical kingdom of Shambhala by the master Pito. Kalachakra is depicted colored red, white, and blue (symbolizing the three principal channels of the Subtle Body), with twenty-four arms and standing in ecstatic sexual union with his eight-armed consort.

Kali (Skt.) The dark awesome Hindu goddess of Transcendence. The transcendental power of sex.

Kali Yuga (Skt.) The present eon. The age of darkness and materialism. One of a repeated cycle of four eons.

Kama/Kamadeva (Skt.) The Hindu Love god, similar to Cupid. The son of Vishnu and Lakshmi, Kama is said to be invisibly present during all acts of love. Eternally youthful and handsome, he is the deity who presides over the mind and is the liberator of desires. Rati, his wife, is the embodiment of sensual love.

Kameshwari (Skt.) A name of Shakti, particularly in her role as lustful mistress. Kameshwari embodies the original power principle of Tantra. She is portrayed holding a noose (attachment or the power of desire), an elephant hook or goad (knowledge or the intellect tamed), a sugarcane bow (the mind), and an arrow (the sense objects). Together, the bow and arrow symbolize the power to act.

Kamini (Skt.) The embodiment of desire. A Love goddess or a loving woman. A term used in connection with sensuality, intoxicants, and transcendental beauty.

Kanda (Skt.) Male sexual gland, probably equivalent to the prostate. Located above the Lingam and below the navel.

Kapala Randhra Dhauti (Skt.) Literally "head cavity purification." A Yogic massage technique that consists in rubbing the area close to the bridge of the nose. Helps clear the sinuses, invigorates the liver, and induces clairvoyance.

Kargyudpa (Tib.)

One of the ancient sects

of Tantric Lamaism.

Founded by Marpa "the

Translator" in the eleventh century, this sect emphasizes the importance of the Tantras, oral transmission, and Yogic practices. Its present hierarch is the Karmapa Lama.

Karma (Skt.) The natural law of action causing reaction. The workings of destiny and that which shapes reality. According to the Eastern view of reality, what we are experiencing now is a direct result of our past actions, either in this life or a previous one. Karma motivates reincarnation.

Karma Mudra (Skt.) The female sexual partner who is adept at sexual Yoga. A Tantric Yogini. Traditionally, there are said to be five different kinds of Karma Mudra, categorized according to physical and psychological characteristics. A Karma Mudra is free from any guilt or shame about her sexuality.

Karmapa (Skt. and Tib.) The hierarch of the Kargyudpas.

Khapushpa (Skt.) Literally "womb flower." Menstrual blood.

Khechari (Skt.) Literally "sky flier." A Yogic technique in which the tongue is gradually elongated and turned backward until it reaches the nostril openings inside the head. Correct practice of the Khechari Mudra is said to free one from hunger, thirst, disease, old age, and death.

KLING (Skt.) A seed-syllable or Mantra, associated with the goddess Kali, the love god Kamadeva, and Krishna. A power word that contains the secret of attraction. Sometimes called KRING.

Kohl (Skt.) Eye balm or eye makeup, black in color, beneficial to the eyes if correctly prepared.

KRING (Skt.) Seed-syllable, particularly associated with the goddess Kali. See KLING.

Krishna (Skt.) "The Dark One," the eighth incarnation of Vishnu, usually blue in color. Krishna is the ideal of the playful, all-potent child, the Eternal Youth who can take many different forms. From the Tantric point of view, Krishna represents the spontaneous power of unconventional love. An embodiment of male eroticism.

Krishna Lila (Skt.) The circular erotic dance of Krishna with the milkmaids (Gopis), symbolic of the swirling of sexual energies through the Chakras. A term used to describe the paradoxical nature of reality. An annual festival of Hinduism. A general term for erotic play.

Kumari (Skt.) A virgin girl.

Kumari Puja (Skt.) The worship of virgins. A Tantric ritual that consists in honoring a virgin girl, viewing her as the embodiment of a goddess.

Kumbhak (Skt.) A container or pot. A term used in Yoga to describe the method of retaining the breath by forming the lower abdomen into the shape of a pot. Used to refer to the retention of breath.

Kundalini (Skt.) The normally latent psychosexual power that, when awakened, ascends through the central channel of the Subtle Body. The root word "kunda" means a pool or reservoir of energy. Kundalini is likened to a coiled snake, ready to strike at any moment. When the Kundalini-energy is correctly directed, it can cause cosmic consciousness to manifest and Liberation to be achieved. Also known as the Kundalini Shakti or Inner Woman.

Kundalini Yoga (Skt.) A form of Yoga intended to awaken and channel Kundalinienergy. Sometimes referred to as Laya Yoga.

Kuntu Zangmo (Tib.) The Cosmic Mother, the "all-good" archetype of compassionate femininity.

Kuntu Zangpo (Tib.) The Cosmic Father, the "all-good" archetype of transcendental masculinity. Often depicted in union with Kuntu Zangmo (the Cosmic Mother). This united form is invoked as a benevolent mystic "ancestor" and meditated on as the ideal couple. Depicted seated in sexual union.

Kurukulla (Skt.) A Tantric form of the goddess Tara in her role of enchantress. Depicted holding a bow and arrow made of flowers. A symbol of the power of love.

Lakshmi (Skt.) The female counterpart or Divine Energy of the god Vishnu, who fulfills a preserving function in the Hindu triad of forces. Lakshmi, who is also called Shri, is the embodiment of prosperity and good fortune.

LANG (Skt.) A Tantric seed-syllable, or Mantra, associated with the earth element, the sense of smell, the square shape, and the color yellow.

Lao-tse A Chinese philosopher of the sixth century B.C., the author of the Tao Te Ching.

Ling (Ch.) Transcendental. A word used to refer to a type of mushroom said to confer immortality and also to the male sexual organ. Possibly derived from the Sanskrit word Lingam.

Lingam (Skt.) The male sexual organ. A symbol of Lord Shiva, the cosmic principle of transcendence. A sign or mark that "proves that existence is real." The male gender.

Locana (Skt.) A name of exalted femininity. A Wisdom goddess or Dakini of blue color, associated with the water element and the eastern part of the universe.

Lotus/Lotus Flower A Tantric term for the female sexual organ, the Yoni.

Lotus Nectar A Tantric term for the sweettasting love-juices of the female partner.

Lotus Posture See Padmasana.

Madya (Skt.) Sweet wine, one of the ingredients used in the Secret Rite of Tantra. Symbolizes the fire element and the purification of the senses.

Mahabandha (Skt.) Literally "the Great Lock or Seal." A yoga technique whereby the anal orifice is covered by the heel of the left foot while the anal muscles are contracted. An aid to controlling the flow of subtle energies in the psycho-organism.

Mahachina (Skt.) The great country of China.

Mahakala (Skt.) Literally "Great Time." The Lord of Time. A Tantric protector or idealization of transcendental compassion. The guardian of the deeper mysteries. A name of Shiva.
