cipal Vedas, known as the Rig, Yajur, Sama, and Atharva. There is an ancient tradition of a lost "fifth" Veda.

Vina (Skt.) A seven-stringed Indian musical instrument, normally with gourds at each end of a fingerboard. Symbolizing the play of the senses, the vina is associated with Saraswati, the consort of Brahma.

Viparitakarani (Skt.) Literally "reverse system." A Yogic term used to refer to the inverse postures of Hatha Yoga and the Tantric philosophical/practice viewpoint, which aims to reverse the outward and downward flow of life energies. Viparitakarani is said to be the best method of overcoming old age and destiny.

Virasana (Skt.) The heroic posture. A comfortable and straightforward Yoga asana ideal for meditation and sexual activities.

Vishnu (Skt.) The preserving aspect of the Hindu triad of forces governing all phenomena. Vishnu rules over the life function and is the Lord of cosmic play. His role is to stimulate eros and satisfy Lakshmi, his consort. Vishnu's force is matriarchal, unconventional, and intuitive. Normally visualized as blue in color, he "dreams the world." His symbols are the conch and the discus. In the microcosm, Vishnu resides in the Heart Chakra.

Vyana (Skt.) One of the five main divisions of the life-force, the Vyana pervades the whole body, circulating the energies derived from food, breath, and the mind. Controls both the expansive and contractive aspects of the being. Associated with a light blue color, with the faculty of hearing, and with body posture.

White Metal See Moon Flower Waters/

Medicine.

White Snow A Taoist term referring to subtle secretions produced from the breasts of woman during sexual arousal. Also known as Immortality Peach Juice and Essence of Coral.

White Tiger's Cavern See Purple Mush-

room Peak.

Womb Breathing A secret Tantric and Taoist breathing technique used to attract virility and vital energy. The person lies in a fetal position, drawing only shallow breaths from the lower abdomen while "abstracting" the mind and visualizing energy entering through the navel region.

Yab (Tib.) Father. The animus, the original male principle.

Yab-Yum (Tib.) The combined male and female principles viewed as the ideal. The resolution of all dualities. Cosmic one-ness.

Yang (Ch.) The Force of Heaven. The positive, male principle, linked to the qualities of expansion, heat, lightness, and dryness. Also a Sanskrit seed-syllable or Mantra associated with the air element, the sense of touch, the crescent shape, and the dark color of space.

Yang Fluid Semen. Sometimes portrayed as celestial dragons in the Taoist tradition.

Yang Number The number eighty-one (nine multiplied by nine). A magical number according to Taoism.

Yantra (Skt.) A mystic diagram, pattern, magical design, or meditation symbol. A way of focusing the attention through visual means. The root word "yan" means to retain. Tantric lovepostures are said to be Yantras since they focus and channel energies. The term "Yantra" can be used to refer to any machine or device. The body is one's personal Yantra, just as one's method of breathing makes one's personal Mantra and one's lifestyle and belief structure determines one's "Tantra."

Yellow Emperor Known as Huang-Ti, he is said to have ruled in the Golden Age (we are presently in the Iron Age or Dark Age of Kali) and was known as the Son of Heaven. He figures prominently in the medical and sexological teachings of Taoism and is said to have ascended to Heaven in broad daylight, having perfected himself through practicing the Sexual Secrets.

Yidam (Tib.) Tutelary deity or idealized representation of esoteric truths. The mystic protector and benefactor. The secret form of the Tantric teacher. One's personal deity, referred to as Isthadevata in Sanskrit.

Yin (Ch.) The Force of Earth. The negative, female principle, linked to the qualities of contraction, cold, heaviness, and wetness. According to Taoism, both man and woman embody Yin and Yang qualities; the predominance of one or the other determines gender.

Yin-Essence Female sexual secretions. The ovum.

Yoga (Skt.) Literally "to join together." Union. The communion of the individual self with the greater Self or godhead. Sexual union is one form of Yoga.

Yoganidrasana (Skt.) Vishnu's sleep posture. Also known as the posture of the intermediate state, it is a Yoga asana requiring flexibility of the back, arms, and legs. It warms the body and releases latent energies.

Yogi (Skt.) A person who practices and is proficient in Yoga. One who has mastered himself, who is in control of his senses.

sealed with the fingers so that the sensual energies associated with ecstasy are not dispersed.
