Abstract
Aspiring to the future: the city as the basis of civilization. The subject of this research is a city, which has become an integral part of everyday life, but at the same time imposes demands on the environment. Multiple researchers attempt to create a favorable image of cities of the future; however, the main challenge is so that human comfort would not harm the environment. The basic need of a modern man is the pursuit of environmental friendliness, which found reflection in the works of sociologists, philosophers, and urban planners. The concepts of E. Howard remained just a utopia, but city of the future can only be "green”. The article applies the comparative analysis, situational analysis, structuring of new concepts on the basis of the Russian and foreign sources. Urban civilization will continue to be the heart of human life. The smart technologies and interaction with biosphere will become the key components of cities of the future. It implies the use of renewable energy, advancement of public electric transport, creation of cyclist-friendly environment. The South Korea's smartest city Songdo is chosen as a probable prototype.
