Общий материалистический подход Батая, конечно, преследует своей целью гораздо большее, чем историческая схема сдвигов в отношениях сакрального и профанного Даже когда Батай занимался социологическими исследованиями религии, он использовал гегельянскую/кожевскую феноменологию смерти. Без феноменологического воплощения пережитого противостояния со смертью, приближаясь к смерти, насколько это возможно в жизни, через опыт конфликта, «раздирания» и противостояния, социальные научные исследования Мосса, Фрейда и других не смогли бы воспламенить мыслителя или заставить его противостоять своему существу и остались бы разрозненными блоками знаний.. Для Батая абстракция - всегда враг. В рамках общей материалистической перспективы разделительная линия между левым и правым полюсами, между чистотой и нечистотой, также является соединением, пространством, где левый и правый полюс утверждаются: когда произносятся и записываются святые слова, они падают пустыми и бессмысленными в вакуум или тишину левого полюса; поскольку левый полюс горит и поглощает, он даёт единственно возможное вдохновение для возведения правильного полюса. Отношения между полюсами, или зарядами, сакрального не диалектические: они дуальные, обратимые и ненакапливаемые. Заряды левого и правого полюсов чередуются, и в толковании Батая расход или (depence) трата происходят не в движении между полюсами, а в сфере священного в целом. Сакральное состоит из этих движущихся зарядов, в этих взрывах накопленной энергии.

Работы Батая о сакральном бросают вызов «культурной» концепции религии, которая доминирует в мышлении современной социологии, а также в религиоведческих и культурных исследованиях. Представление о левом полюсе сакрального очень важно для решения этой задачи и для понимания Батаем религии, общества и политической власти.
Для Батая всё священное состоит из растрат и потерь; они прокляты; у каждого есть как левый, так и правый заряд.
Сакральное понимается как дуальное и амбивалентное, а не как единое, бинарное или монистическое: сакральное не является противоположностью профанного, но является тем, что сбивает с толку, взрывает и разрушает упорядоченное противопоставление сакрального и профанного, на котором основано профанное.
Следует отдать должное хаосу. Табу существуют не только для того, чтобы защитить профанный мир, но и для того, чтобы дать сакральному умноженную силу насилия.
Несмотря на это, все известные, или изученные, общества «предают» сакральное, в понимании Батая.
Сакральное никогда не было свободным от компромиссов со сферой профанного; левый полюс никогда не был полностью освобождён от правого. Общество и его социальные институты терпят крах, так же как политика и сообщество терпят крах.
Сегодня невыразимость и ужас маскируются смехом, (пост)ирониче- ской отстранённостью и невнимательностью, вызванной технологиями. Хотя священное, несомненно, самая мощная сила, известная человеческому обществу, сила, которую невозможно сдержать ни религиозными учреждениями, ни идеологическими или правовыми репрессиями, ни пустотой инфоразвлечения.
Кто пожертвует собой ради либеральной демократии? Ради науки и техники? Ради потребительских свобод?
