trol pills is that they rob a woman of her copulins, the special sex scent of her Yoni secretions, which play a large part in stimulating the male sex drive.

Many well-known creations of perfumers rely on potent animal extracts to create a basic "tone" or "carrier vibration" upon which the more subtle fragrances can be imposed. Most commonly these basic ingredients come from the sex glands; musk is obtained from the secretion in a gland sac of a type of male deer, and civet from the anal gland of the civet cat. Most floral perfumes are derived from plant essences that are comparable to sexual secretions in animals.

Perfume and incense have been linked to sexuality at all times and in all cultures. Science long ago confirmed that the sexual instincts are stimulated by smell, in humans as well as in animals. The sense of smell is much more acute in animals though than in human beings, who have become desensitized through unnatural habits. A natural lifestyle significantly increases sensitivity to odors and opens up a whole new world of subtle fragrance, the very existence of which is unsuspected by the average person.

Sudden changes in body odor indicate changes in mood or emotions. Deep relaxation and the release of inner tensions cause the whole body chemistry to change; our odor also changes and we may notice that suddenly we seem to smell especially good. This is the sign that the bodily temple has become a Perfumed Garden in which the spirit is joyously experiencing inner harmony.

Scientific analysis of odors has established that it is the shape of the molecular structure of smells that determines their effect. Thus, all camphor types of smell have spherical molecules, musky smells have disc-shaped molecules, flowery smells have disc-shaped molecules with an extended tail, peppermint smells have wedge-shaped molecules, and most alcohol smells have rod-shaped molecules. The inner part of the nose consists of cartilage, mucous membranes, olfactory nerves, and tiny hairs. The mucous mem - branes bear a strong biochemical resemblance to some of the secretions produced by the pituitary gland, which governs the sex drive as well as metabolic functions. When we inhale an odor, the molecular vibration and shape cause changes in the mucous mem - branes, resonate with the tiny hairs and olfactory nerves, and stimulate the inner

olfactory bulb of the brain.

Thus, the sense

of smell is multifaceted and

linked directly

to the chemistry of the body.

Above all, perfume, incense, and fragrant oils create and enhance moods. They act on the sentiments and stimulate the supersensual faculties. Tantric practitioners employ this property in love rituals. Particular perfumes are specified for different rites. Before sexual union, the female partner is worshipped as the embodiment of the creative force, the Shakti or Wisdom-energy; her body parts are then anointed with different perfumes to honor her creative role and lift up her psyche so she can truly manifest as a goddess. In the sexual ritual known as the Rite of the Five Essentials (see Part 3), the finest oil of jasmine is applied to the hands, oil of patchouli or keora to the neck and cheeks, essence of amber or hina musk to the breasts, extract of spikenard or valerian to the hair, musk from the musk deer to the sexual region, oil of sandalwood to the thighs and essence of saffron to the feet of the woman. For the male partner, sandalwood oil or paste is applied to the forehead, neck, chest, navel, sexual region, upper arms, thighs, hands, and feet.

A c c o r d i n g to Islamic tradition, the Prophet Muhammad once declared: "Three things are especially dear to me. These are women, perfume, and prayer." In the Arabic lands perfume is highly valued and is believed to strengthen the brain, the heart, and the sexual organs. The spiritual significance of perfume was well known to the Arabs, Greeks, Babylonians, and ancient Egyptians, who used numerous aromatic oils in daily life as well as for mummification of the dead.

Recently there has been an awakening of interest in the healing and beautifying properties of essential oils from flowers and herbs. Pure essences are readily available, so try to avoid using synthetic perfumes, for their effect is never the same as that of natural essences. Familiarize yourself with the different essential oils and learn to distinguish fine from inferior qualities. A good book for the beginner is The Art of Aromatherapy by Robert Tisserand. Experiment with mixing your own scents, using almond or sesame seed oil as a base and adding essential oils as desired. Essence of lotus, rose, jasmine, night-queen, patchouli, rosemary, lavender, saffron, amber, myrrh, and sandalwood are just some of the natural perfumes that are suitable for Tantric love-rites.

The harmful impurities of noxious things like onion and garlic are perceived in the four great realms. They produce an unclean smell in the Buddhafields and displease the gods of space. The protective beings of pure lineage will not approach anywhere near a person who smells of such things.

Use perfume as an aid to your natural sensuality. Whether applied to the body, burnt as incense, mixed in massage oil, used in saunas or mixed with water and sprayed into a

room, natural perfumes will contribute much to the harmonization of body and mind. Use fragrant scents to enhance the outer atmosphere and to stimulate the inner spirit.

Those who present Shiva with garlands of flowers, of the oleander or of the sweet-smelling jasmine, shall obtain the object of their wishes.

Natural environments can be erotically stimulating. In this Chinese painting a couple make love on a mat placed beneath a willow tree and perform a variation of the Taoist posture known as Donkeys in the Third Moon of Spring. Watercolor on paper, late nineteenth century.

environment

The environment sets the mood and should please the senses as well as the mind. With a little bit of work, almost any space can be transformed into an erotic temple. The hard

lines and corners of Western architecture are easily altered by a careful selection of drapes, wall hangings, canopies, ornaments, and lighting. By using such materials, an "inner sanctum" can be created within the home, a place that is truly in natural harmony with the spirit.

Eastern temples generally incorporate domes, arches, and curved surfaces into their architecture. These shapes enhance the spiri-

tual sentiments by their harmonious relationship with the forms of the human body. Colors are also important in the creation of a harmonious atmosphere. Red and purple are stimulating, deep blue and violet are relaxing and invigorating. Color directly affects the subtle centers of the psyche (the Chakras) and ideally one should choose color combinations that stimulate rather than inhibit sexuality.

Keeping the bed and furniture close to ground level helps to create a feeling of intimacy and is very practical for love-making. Carpets, rugs, and cushions are musts for the modern Tantric love temple. Candles are easy to acquire and, when artfully placed, create a special ambiance. Open fires or fountains may not always be possible, but candlelight, fresh fruit, incense, and flowers certainly are.

Plants and flowers are easy to tend, even in the city, and give an immediate feeling of naturalness. Ideally, as many natural elements as possible should be introduced into the home environment. Besides plants, organic materials such silk hangings, handwoven rugs, and down cushions can be used. The main point is to maintain contact with natural elements. Since both sound and light play a

significant role in the environment, these factors should also be thoughtfully considered.

Candlelight is preferable to electric light because electric current has an inorganic frequency that is not harmonious with the subtle changes that occur in the body during erotic stimulation. The clear and soft light of candles can help to still and concentrate the mind and move it away from worldly thoughts. Candlelight is especially flattering to flesh tones and can be well used in conjunction with mirrors. Mirrors can help create a feeling of spaciousness and, when strategically placed, have great erotic potential. Naked bodies, colorful drapes, carpets, cushions, incense, mirrors, and soft flickering candlelight all blend well to produce a theatre of erotic delight.

The five senses are the "instruments" of lovers; we must therefore learn to play them masterfully and with finesse. The sixth sense, the mind, is the connecting agent; it is the most discriminating of all the senses and by far the most sensitive. A fine environment frees the mind to commune with all the other senses.

Yogis often go to cremation grounds to perform Tantric sexual rituals; the environment is said to be conducive to transcendence

Decorate the beautiful walls of the love-chamber with pictures and other objects upon which the eye may dwell with delight. Scatter some musical instruments and refreshments, rosewater, essences, fans, and books containing amorous songs and illustrations of love-postures. Splendid wall lights should gleam, reflected by wide mirrors, while both man and woman should not have any reserve or false shame, giving themselves up in complete nakedness to their unrestrained passions, upon a fine bed, ornamented with many useful pillows and covered with a canopy. The sheets should be sprinkled with flowers and scent, and sweet incense should be burned. In such an environment let the man, ascending the throne of love, enjoy the woman in ease and comfort, gratifying both his and her every wish and whim.

Natural elements should be introduced into the home to help harmonize the environment and senses.

because it reminds the Yogi of death, the great doorway to the beyond.

Love-making in Nature's own environment is a totally different experience. There is a natural Shakti or energy inherent in all the creations of Nature. If the couple connect with this natural force, it will enhance their Shakti and act as a potent virilific. The transcendental aspects of physical love can be heightened by entering into mystical communion with the elements of Nature. Also, the unconventional and spontaneous aspects of love can be reawakened by such experiences in the country or on the beach. When you return to the city, you'll be able to hold the memory of union under the stars, in the fields or on the sand as a special token of

your feeling for each other. A stone, rock, shell, or other object brought back from such an encounter can take on deep significance in the confines of the home.

Within your home, try to create a unique atmosphere where you customarily make love. If possible, keep this area private and separate so the chamber of love assumes a magical and sacred quality that enhances eroticism. Lovers need a private inner sanctum where they can relax and experiment without fear of disturbance.

Try to invest your environment with as much of your own spirit and creativity as possible. Doing so will help bring out the best in you and endow your home with a life and mood of its own.

The abode should ideally be situated near some water and divided into different compartments for different purposes. If possible, it should be surrounded by a garden and contain inner and outer rooms. The main room should be balmy with rich perfumes and contain a bed, soft, agreeable to the sight, covered with a clean cloth, low in the middle part, having garlands and bunches of flowers upon it, a canopy above it, and two pillows, one at the top and another at the bottom. There should also be a sort of couch, and at the head of this a stool on which should be placed fragrant ointments, perfume, and flowers,

KAMA SUTRA

Clothing is an integral part of Oriental erotic portrayals. From a Chinese painting on silk, circa eighteenth century.

clothing

Most Western work clothes tend to be over-tailored and to divide the body into separate segments, which is neither

healthy nor practical for love-making. Fumbling around with buttons and zippers is hardly conducive to spontaneous eroticism. Also in the West the upper and lower parts of the body are usually separated by a tight belt. This can be both uncomfortable and unhealthy since it restricts the free flow of energy throughout the body. Try to be kind to your body, particularly as it becomes more sensitive through a Yogic lifestyle. Loose garments are attractive, simple and inexpensive

to make. They are also available ready-made and are often less expensive than regular tailored clothing.

Tight trousers are especially restricting and can actually cause damage to the sexual region. Eastern doctors commonly point to this as one of the main causes of such sexual problems as impotence and sterility, as well as cancers of the lower parts of the body. The psychic centers are upset by clothing that is too tight and the flow of vital energy from one part of the body to another is restricted. So try to get into the habit of changing from your working clothes to more flowing and comfortable apparel at home. Leave your body free to breathe and luxuriate in the soft sensual feeling of loose gowns.

Generally we are in the habit of wearing our "best" or most alluring clothes when we go out socially, to parties or to the theatre.

This is fine, but concern with public appearance should not take precedence over how we appear to our loved one in the privacy of the home. The Kama Sutra states that "when a wife approaches her husband in private, her dress should consist of many ornaments, various flowers, a wrap or cloth of different colors, and some sweet-smelling ointments or unguents." The text goes on to advise that a woman reserve her best clothes for her husband, and that he do likewise. Those who wish to constantly please and excite their lover should have a range of intimate clothing and should remember to dress up for their partner, as well as for social functions.

Much of the so-called erotic wear commercially available is made of synthetic ma-

terials. B o u t i q u e s generally p r o d u c e

expensive bedroom clothing that is geared more to fetishism than to comfort or natural beauty. But, fortunately, it's easy to create your own "fantasy range" of clothing using simple silks or satin, which need not even be sewn. There are also many Eastern clothing styles readily available, such as caftans, kimonos, Japanese short length "happy coats," loose "Thai" or "Indian" pajamas, "tiearound" tops, wraps, and so on.

Clothes should be fresh, aired, and well cleaned. Perfume sachets give clothes a sensuous aura, and are extremely easy to make. The feel and smell of clothing, as well as its appearance, contribute to the erotic sentiment. Ornaments such as bracelets, necklaces, rings, and flowers have a symbolic significance in the Tantric tradition; they function as psychic protection and serve to enhance beauty. In the East women adorn themselves with special jewelry for the delight of their lovers rather than for public show. The Art of Love demands that we make use of all erotically stimulating aids to captivate and uplift the senses.

In the Arabian love treatise The Perfumed

Garden, which was translated into English by Sir Richard Burton and published in 1886, there is an example of a love-position that

makes use of clothing as a sexual aid: "The woman wears a pair of harem trousers, which she lets drop upon her heels; she then stoops down, placing her head between her feet, so that her neck is in the trousers. At that m o - ment the man should seize her legs and turn her on her back, making her perform a somersault; then with his legs curved under him, he should bring his sexual organ against hers, slipping it between her legs and inserting it fully."

Chinese women of the medieval period developed extraordinarily beautiful and erotic bedroom wear, devised to reveal and conceal at the same time, thus stimulating the imagination. Some of the most provocative and exquisite, in our opinion, are the loosely tied bodice of silk and the elaborately flared silk leggings, which normally trailed colored ribbons. Throughout the Orient there are many examples of simple yet erotically stimulating clothes that are both a pleasure to the eye and a delight to the body. Since clothing is so much a part of life, it should be designed to enhance the charms of the wearer rather than restrict freedom. Color and texture are as important as style and these should be chosen to stimulate the senses. Clothing should be an extension of the personality and heighten sensitivity rather than inhibit it.

Oriental clothing is generally loose and designed to allow freedom of movement and easy access. From a Chinese watercolor of the seventeenth century.
