Изучая опыт государств-членов Альянса, следует признать, что роль государства в НАТО зависит от причин присоединения к организации, не забывая при этом о том, что обоснования для членства в течение долгого времени также могут изменяться.
Таким образом, можно утверждать, что существует возможность достижения баланса между сотрудничеством и влиянием. Необходимо учитывать реалии мировой политики, и, одновременно, малые государства обязаны использовать свой политический капитал, то есть, правом вето в процессе принятия решений, очень осторожно, исключительно для принятия жизненно важных решений. Дипломатия должна быть хорошо сбалансирована. Чрезмерно активная спекуляция национальными интересами может привести противоположным результатам. Учитывая эти реалии, а также с помощью активной и позитивной политики, малые страны смогут добиться положительных результатов как в рамках НАТО, так и в других региональных структурах безопасности.
